Spies on the Roof of the World

Saturday 31 July 2010 @ 3:43 pm

Heres another regurgitation whilst we feverishly type our fingers down to the nubs. This classic Damn Interesting article was originally published on 28 August 2007.

China'sIn the closing weeks of 1964, the US Central Intelligence Agency was gripped by anxiety in the wake of troubling news. On October 16th, a great mushroom cloud had been spotted towering over the remote Chinese missile-testing range at Lop Nur. All evidence had indicated that Chinese scientists were at least a year away from squeezing the destructive secrets from the mighty atom, but this bombshell underscored the agencys dangerously feeble espionage efforts in the Far East.

Details regarding the twenty-two kiloton device were scarce, but the US regarded the development as an unwelcome wrinkle in the already precarious Cold War. Officials from India were also distressed, having felt the business end of Chinas military during a recent border dispute. In the interest of self-preservation, the two nations made a secret pact to combine their China-watching efforts. Photo reconnaissance satellites were still too primitive for practical spying, and high-flying surveillance planes were too conspicuous, but there was one alternative vantage point. The intelligence agencies hatched a nefarious scheme to keep a sharp eye on Chinas weapons tests from atop Indias Nanda Devi, one of the tallest mountains of the imposing Himalayan mountain range. It offered an unobstructed view of Chinas distant test site, assuming one could manage to hoist a sufficiently powerful electronic eye to its summit.

Saturday 31 July 2010 @ 3:43 pm

pAustralian journalist Rak Razam sends word that his new book, iAYA: A Shamanic Odyssey/i, has just been released (available from Amazon A href=http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/098064870X/thedailygrailUS/A and A href=http://www.amazon.co.uk/o/ASIN/098064870X/thedailygrail0cUK/a). Heres what Rak has to say about the new book:/pblockquotepI travelled to Peru on magazine assignment in 2006 to research what the archetype of the shaman was like in the 21st century, and the business of spirituality that had sprung up around it. A href=http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/098064870X/thedailygrailimg class=node-image src=/images/BC/BC_Aya.jpg title= A Shamanic Odyssey align=right vspace=15 hspace=15 //aIts been a three-year mission to complete the book and launch Icaro Publishing to release it, and the time has never been more potent for this book to be shared with the world./ppAyahuasca usage has enveloped a large swath of the West and in the last few months following the legal victory of the Santo Daime ayahuasca church in Oregon, ayahuasca has been positively written up by such mainstream bastions of the establishment as Time magazine, NBC Today Show, and ayahuasca has previously been the focus of the LA Times, New York Times, National Geographic Adventure, BBC news, et.al./ppIn AYA I capture in intimate detail what the Peruvian ayahuasca trail is like, and detail my personal experiences drinking this powerful vegetal medicine. This book is for the millions of people across the world that are interested in not just shamanism, but what it represents a direct connection to the planet and a spiritual way to see the world. Its a unique adventure that echoes the archetypal Western quest, propelling the reader on a cosmological travel memoir that is at turns beautiful, terrifying, mind-blowing and ultimately, cathartic./p/blockquotepYou can find a lot more information about the book, including an excerpt and image gallery, at A href=http://www.ayathebook.com /the iAYA/i website/A./p
